I might become sick.

I got suckered into watching one of the PETA videos. WARNING! This is seriously disturbing WARNING! Someone said they were going vegetarian and I wanted to see why. I was well aware of what has to happen for a person to be able to consume an animal. We have to slaughter it. I wasn't prepared for how disgusting the conditions and treatment the animals receive is. Who would want to eat an animal that goes through that process? Did you see the legions? The sores? EW! And the growth hormones? If they're going to spend all of that money on the growth... But it is true that Americans are led around by the dollar by their noses. So free range and seafood for me now. Seafood that didn't injure dolphins, right?
That really enrages me. What good is having the ASPCA when we don't give a damn about farm animals? Great! You can't torture, maim, or be cruel to a pet. But as long as you are a corporation making money for the US government, that's ok!
A small time farmer could never get away with that crap! NEVER! PETA may be full of some extremists, but sometimes I find myself siding with them.
I am not opposed to eating animals. I watch that all the time on the Discovery channel and Animal Planet. That's what animals do. We need to the protein for our brains. But I am greatly opposed to torture. I'm sure that if everything was free range, it would cost a lot of money. Maybe that's how things should be. In the mean time, I'm going to go find some milk that doesn't come from horrendous dairy farms and some fruits and vegetables. Maybe pick up a can of tuna (dolphin safe). I spent far too long ignoring the facts because I liked the taste.

Date: 2004-02-27 04:45 pm (UTC)Luckily the dairy producers nearby are in the cool. I may take a tour just to make sure, but it's a mom and pop place that got bigger. And they have free range eggs I think. I seem to remember seeing those.
