I might become sick.

I got suckered into watching one of the PETA videos. WARNING! This is seriously disturbing WARNING! Someone said they were going vegetarian and I wanted to see why. I was well aware of what has to happen for a person to be able to consume an animal. We have to slaughter it. I wasn't prepared for how disgusting the conditions and treatment the animals receive is. Who would want to eat an animal that goes through that process? Did you see the legions? The sores? EW! And the growth hormones? If they're going to spend all of that money on the growth... But it is true that Americans are led around by the dollar by their noses. So free range and seafood for me now. Seafood that didn't injure dolphins, right?
That really enrages me. What good is having the ASPCA when we don't give a damn about farm animals? Great! You can't torture, maim, or be cruel to a pet. But as long as you are a corporation making money for the US government, that's ok!
A small time farmer could never get away with that crap! NEVER! PETA may be full of some extremists, but sometimes I find myself siding with them.
I am not opposed to eating animals. I watch that all the time on the Discovery channel and Animal Planet. That's what animals do. We need to the protein for our brains. But I am greatly opposed to torture. I'm sure that if everything was free range, it would cost a lot of money. Maybe that's how things should be. In the mean time, I'm going to go find some milk that doesn't come from horrendous dairy farms and some fruits and vegetables. Maybe pick up a can of tuna (dolphin safe). I spent far too long ignoring the facts because I liked the taste.

Date: 2004-02-27 01:25 pm (UTC)I happen to be a vegetarian, because when I was 7-8 ish, I was a little animal-rights activist. I was the kid who wanted to save the wolves and the dolphins and such. Now I'm still vegetarian out of habit. ^^; I'm not opposed to people kiling animals for eating them anymore, but I couldn't do it myself. I couldn't bring myself to eat the organs of something that was once alive. And I certainly protest, as you do, to the cruel mistreatment of animals. They live and breathe and think, just like humans, and I couldn't bring myself to killing something that can see me with its own eyes.
However, I would just like to say that I know someone who works in management for PETA. She's my cousin's girlfriend, and... Well, she's a bit extreme. To say the least. >_<;; And I believe PETA has been a bit too extreme for their missions, especially with things like that whole issue about Hugh Hueffner's (sp?) monkey. What in the world was that about? If PETA wants to make an impression, they should make the news with evidence like what I'm imagining is on that file.

Date: 2004-02-27 04:39 pm (UTC)I can certainly understand having those convictions, but ...oh this was number 2. I'm a humanitarian first! Which means I want to end suffering, but if we can't help our own species out how do we hope to help other species? Animal rights' is related to humanitarian efforts. People who mistreat animals aren't that far from mistreating people. I wonder how the help wanted ads for those kinds of places go.
I wouldn't be able to end an animal's life. I'm just not that damned hungry.

Date: 2004-02-27 04:45 pm (UTC)Luckily the dairy producers nearby are in the cool. I may take a tour just to make sure, but it's a mom and pop place that got bigger. And they have free range eggs I think. I seem to remember seeing those.

Date: 2004-02-27 05:09 pm (UTC)But I'm Texan and boy do I love steak!
I only watched up to the cow getting it's horns cut off. I agree it's disgusting the way those men were just JAMMING those chickens into those boxes. At least just CUT their heads off so they'll be instant dead.
I dunno. Nothing will motivate me to stop eating meat unless we start slaughtering humans again. Until then, I'll feel sad for the animals, hate those men that can DO that, and then have a nice BBQ sandwich to ease my troubles.
