Xman The Last Stand Without Spoilers!
Friday, May 26th, 2006 08:58 pmWell if you're like me, you ditched any notion that the movie universe was the comic or cartoon verse. I was seriously disappointed in the first movie. I mean my favorite character didn't make it into the movie at all. They changed his girlfriend's history completely. And I had to settle on liking a BAD guy as my favorite character. Now of course, I like Xavier. But the mains were... well there's Storm who is completely placid and uninteresting. Jean Grey and Scott Summers I always considered to be goody goodies. Oh sure the team needed them, but they weren't on my favorite list. I always wanted them to get out of whatever bind they got into, but I wasn't like "Oh great, no Gambit this episode, but it's saved because JEAN AND SCOTT LOVE!" Totally didn't happen. Then they messed up Rogue. And ... that left me completely disappointed.
And yes, I know Gambit is a totally lame character. He has a cheezy, stereotypical cajun accent. Which I adored. It's just the fact that he's one of those hopeless romantics. He loves Rogue (long before Ice Man ever thought about it) unconditionally. He doesn't care if he can't kiss her. He's willing to give it a try because he's not concerned about his health whatsoever. If only it will prove his love. And here's Rogue, this emotionally damaged woman who put her first boyfriend into a permanent coma. I liked him. I liked his powers. I liked his accent.
So when X2 rolled around I had accepted the fact that the movie verse was an alternate reality where we had the same players, but things happened a little differently.
All of that being said, I'm cutting this short because I wanted to make a short update in the first place and this rambling.
X3. For those familar with the term think AU (and it doesn't stand for Australia). It's an alternate universe where the names aren't changed, but the situations have.
Ditch the mythology that you know and love and just love the characters. If you can.
All in all, I didn't hate X3, but there were things I miss.
So where are the other villians? I know Magneto is fun. And he's easy. And he's complex. But he was rarely the super villian that the team went against. There was always Mr. Sinister. Apocalypse. Some misunderstood mutant. I know it's a movie and it needs a big plot, but the lack of diversity among the bad guys is sad.
And how many people were going to die in this one? What's with Wolverine cutting people's arms off? I know he's unhinged, but... sheesh! He seemed to have a bit of restraint. He wasn't into murder, just getting his way.
Where does this leave us for a fourth movie? I'm always thinking they could show an alternate dimension. There's always Bishop. Or Age of Apocalypse. But do you think the directors really want to sit around to try to explain that? Highly unlikely.
I'm the Juggernaut!
