Oak Ridger killed on Saturday. I went to school with Terrence. My earliest and maybe last memory of him were in second grade. He would always fall asleep in our class. We had Mrs. Chilcoat.

Michigan criminal is charged in OR murder

Oak Ridge police have charged a Michigan criminal with the Saturday shooting death of an Oak Ridge man.
Police detectives served a criminal homicide warrant against Thomas Edward Kotewa, 33, 1800 Woodside Court, Bay City, Mich. He is accused of shooting Terrance Lashawn Mims, 26, 119 Jonathan Lane.

Kotewa was arrested Saturday morning, several hours after the shooting, and was being held in the Anderson County Jail on fugitive from justice and theft charges. He was a suspect in the shooting at that time.

Mims was shot in the head shortly before 3:30 a.m. outside of a Woodland neighborhood apartment building. He was flown by LifeStar air ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville, where he later died.

Both men have criminal histories and both have served time in prison, Kotewa in Michigan and Mims in Tennessee.

Diane Mims said her son had some problems with crime but that he had a heart of gold.

"He was a kind and loving person," Mims said of her eldest son. "He would give his right arm to help someone."
Mims was on life support at UT hospital after the shooting and was pronounced dead on Saturday. He was not taken off life support until Sunday because he was an organ donor, his mother said.

"His pancreas, kidneys and liver were donated to people in Pittsburgh and Virginia," Mims said.

Mims said she and other family members are dealing with her son's death the best way they can.

"I'm surviving," she said.

The family is making arrangements for a funeral after Mims' body is returned from Nashville where an autopsy was performed.

Kotewa, meanwhile, remains in jail under a $1 million bond. He is on parole from Michigan after serving time there for other crimes.

After the shooting Saturday at 194 N. Purdue Ave., police began talking to witnesses but have not given a motive for the shooting. Kotewa's name came up because of a car that allegedly left the scene. That car was later found on Tacoma Road. Kotewa is accused of stealing it from a woman who lives there. Records said the woman loaned him the car but he failed to return it after two hours. He was arrested initially on that charge.

Capt. Alan Massengill said Sunday detectives were getting conflicting reports about the shooting. He said witnesses were not cooperating with the investigators.
Mims said she wanted those who saw the shooting to talk to police.

"No one has come forward to tell the truth," she said.

Also a friend's grandfather died this past week. I need to send a sympathy card to him and his mother. His grandfather was a really nice old man. He was one of those classic people who don't really exist anymore.

No fun
