Remembrance

So I saw one post about this on my friend's list. I remember two years go, I was tired of reading about it. There was just so much saturation about the event. Get your remembrance hot dog! But it hasn't even been five years yet and I had to watch remembrances on the History channel.
I just wanted to take a small moment of silence to remember those three thousand souls lost on 9-11-01. I had no clue what was going on at the time. My world was this perfect little bubble. My brother was back in town. He'd just gotten out of boot camp and the most difficult part of his time in the armed forces was over. I had a boyfriend who had driven with me to Parris Island with the rest of the family. I wasn't scheduled to work that day, but I had set my alarm to get up and spend some time with my brother. My alarm went off at 8:30. There was news that the World Trade tower had been attacked. That wasn't anything new. It had happened not that long ago it seemed. I hit the snooze. It was too early for someone who worked 3 pm - midnight to be awake if no one was in the house. 8:45 the alarm went off again. The other tower had been attacked. What did I care here in East Tennessee?
Later I came to my senses after more sleep. And it occurred to me what had happened. The dread and anxiety sunk in. All of East Tennessee and some of North Carolina and Kentucky would be gone if one of those planes decided to crash here. We were safe, of course. There are military bases nearby.
Just take a moment to remember those poor souls who leapt to their deaths from a fiery building. Don't forget. Don't get complacent. Don't get so politicized that you forget that one moment when we all bonded together. Don't forget when the stars and stripes were raised on Ground Zero. Don't forget the Pentagon. And don't forget that field in Pennsylvania.
And then remember the Gulf Coast.

PS At work today, Matthew kept getting 9-11 calls. Calls from 9-11 personnel needing information about cell phones. 9-11 calls on 9-11. Eerie, huh?
