I'm frustrated
Sunday, November 9th, 2003 01:54 amSo it looks like Howard Dean is going to win the Democrat primaries. That makes me sad. I cannot find a reason to like this guy. Well yes he is better than Bush. He doesn't want a war with Iraq, but the top items on his agenda include giving healthcare to everyone under 25 and raising the retirement age. This means that when you are 69, you can retire from the work force and collect social security. Now how many places do you know of where a 65 year old can get a job? Or how about this one. How many 65 year olds do you know in the work place? I'd like to know that. But it's important that everyone under 25 has insurance and that 65 year olds are still in the work place. That really makes me mad!! Yes, insurance is important. Yes, we should all have it especially children. But at the cost of making people who are 68 years old stay in the work force? And should this be our top priority? It doesn't even sound like something insurance that is all that great. Another item on the list is increased homeland security. Ok, increased homeland security? Let's all get MORE paranoid. Security is good, but shouldn't we be informing our people first instead of building barricades? A society based on paranoia and the belief that metal detectors will somehow shield us from the bad guys. Oh and no nail clippers either. You could use that a weapon. As my brother said when he got back from visiting my dad and rode on one of the major airlines, "I could do more damage with the dental floss that they didn't take from me than with my nail clippers." So tell me how fortifying our defenses is going to help. I do agree that first responders could use more money. But I'd much rather see something done about school systems than immediately run into the office guns blazing talking about boosting homeland security. I don't think that sends the right message. And lastly we come to balancing the budget. This would be accomplished by the thing I talked about before of raising the retirement age as well as repealing the tax cuts. As I've said before, I'm all for increasing taxes. But not for crappy healthcare and the benefit of getting rid of the deficit. SCREW THE DEFICIT! Let's work on this society first. Let's get rid of tax cuts and let's even raise taxes if only so that we can get on the same level as Canada and France and Great Britian and have great healthcare for all not just those under 25. Let's have school systems that aren't good in the rich neighborhoods. Let's build a community by educating our children in the school that is in our neighborhood and not using our voucher to send our children to the other side of town. Money cannot buy community. It's sad that it can buy a better education at the cost of community. I've said it before and I'll say it again, we need to work to better the school system in our neighborhoods not take the easy road and ship our children to the better schools. And again, the problem is that we don't have time because we're working. Always working. Where are the jobs? Where is the money? Do I believe that increasing taxes will provide more time for parents to work on bettering the school systems? I don't know. I don't know where the jobs are. I don't know if good healthcare would cause us to slow down.
I was eating dinner tonight with two thirteen year olds. They were talking about how Italians wouldn't have so much sauce on their fetticini and there wouldn't be any chicken in it either. And how the French eat a lot of bread and cheese. I said that's why Americans are so fat. Italy eats a lot of pasta. France eats a lot of bread and cheese. Americans eat a lot of meat. That's all we eat. That's why we are fat. We don't have much in the way of public transportation because we're a much larger country than the European countries (European since Canada is pretty big) so we don't walk to work that much. We just don't have a culture. We've spent so much energy on being politically correct that we forgot to care about something that mattered. And that stupid red flag with the blue X and the stars on it calling itself the pride of the South and symbol of the Confederacy is NOT a culture. It's ignorance. It's lack of change. It's not the symbol of unity that we need.
Going back to Howard Dean. Let's talk about what he did that gives him props, his greatest moment as Slate.com is calling it. He signed a bill called the civil unions bill. This meant that a gay "marriage" had as much strength as a heterosexual marriage. Partners were entitled to insurance, etc. So what?!?!? I'm supposed to be impressed that this man stood by something that is obvious to me? He stood by the fact that all unions should be recognized equally especially after his state's supreme court said as much? I might give him some credit for standing up for himself except that he quoted as saying Gay marriage "makes me uncomfortable, the same as anybody else." Yeah. Whatever, Dean. What makes you uncomfortable? Do you think gays are perverts and because they have same sex partners a gay man might fall for you? Why does that make you uncomfortable? That's pretty strange. Where did you go to school?
Now let's talk about my favorite candidate who again has no chance in hell of winning. Not only is she a woman, but she's a black woman. And she's single at that. Divorced anyway. Her agenda includes bettering our education system. She wants to if not do away with standardized testing, she wants to improve the tests. She's not much for vouchers either. I wonder why I would like someone who doesn't like a voucher which basically is the equivalent of a free pass to whichever school you want your child to attend. And how about this one. This one makes me love this woman. She wants to get rid of the Patriot Act. Do you know how much I love her for saying that. Do you know how much it pains me to know that she can't hope to win? Lastly she wants to break down gender barriers. I'm afraid of what that could mean, but I have faith in Carol Moseley Braun. So far she hasn't let me down. What is her greatest moment? She held off the senate from approving a bill that no one had read. It would have given the Daughters of the Confederacy (or some such organization) a congressionally approved trademark. The senators were going to approve it because they hadn't read the bill. It seemed simple enough. She stood up there and talked and argued until all day until they changed their minds.
Braun is the real deal is far as I can tell. She is it. The one. She's our Bartlett. But we can't have her because she's a woman and she's black and she's divorced. And Howard Dean is a man and a governor and he's married and he's white. I don't know what I could do to fix this. So I'm writing about her. I'm making a public entry in my journals. But that's not going to get her to win. I don't have any method to get her to win. I could go from door to door trying to win people over, but that would take too long. I could get more people to help me. But would people really listen to a woman trying to get another woman elected? I think they would if I presented a good argument. And still, I can't do it. I've got to eat and I've got other commitments that prevent me from convincing people that they need Braun. She's our woman. She's got it all. Dean is just some cardboard cut out who will say what most people want to hear, pretending to have resistance and difficulties, and getting elected because he's not Bush and he opposes the war that most Americans and the rest of the world are tired of.
Right now I'm listening to a set by Blank and Jones which includes a mix of the Terminator theme song with snippets from T2. Go Governor Sch...er whatever.
I also like common law marriages. They're handy. I don't think that divorce should be a popular thing, but I think if marriages were made by living with someone for 2 years people would put more thought into their daily lives. They wouldn't muddle through them day by day without thinking about the community around them. The other person sharing their home. They would realize that they aren't the only ones in the universe. And maybe people wouldn't continue in crappy relationships feeling helpless. I just thought it was an interesting concept.
I wrote about Bubba Ho-tep on Garrett's board. Warren says that he thought it was a good movie. It gave idols a chance for redemption. I think that's a stupid premise for a movie. But we all know that I'm a high minded idealist sometimes.
Also this is a quote from something I posted on Garrett's board...
In other news, the picture of the week is not the picture of the lawyer who was shot. Or the picture of a collapsed sinkhole. Or a picture of what is left from the fires.
Nope. None of these pictures win. (You can see all 8 of the pictures here MSN Picture of the Week)
The winning picture is this one.

Yes, puppies are cute. Aww. How charming. But I can a buy calendar and get the same thing. Boy this society sure is in touch with what is important. Puppies of course. It also comes with an audio. The only other one that comes with audio is the forest fire one. The lawyer who was shot comes with disturbing video. But the puppies come with audio. And you will all be very glad to know that all of the puppies were bought. I mean WHAT THE FUCK???!?!??!?!?!! Great! Some photographer takes a great photo op commercial picture of these pups and they all get sold. Hooray! Who gives a shit? I believe there are far more important things to be said than that.
Not to mention our great commander and chief and leader of the free world is off signing legislature and saying things like children who are inches from being born. Partial birth abortions are NOT abortions done moments before the baby is born. They aren't even the majority of abortions performed. They are usually performed under difficult circumstances such as the mother has been trying to become pregnant and then into the 2nd or 3rd trimester they discover the fetus has some horrible birth defect. Or some other such. Most abortions are performed days or a few weeks after conception, usually within the first trimester. And it is very disturbing to me that our President does not know this. Or rather does know this, but is being sanctimonious and condescending to me and saying that he doesn't know this. I'm very glad that he does not think the people that he governs know what a partial birth abortion is and that he doesn't want to clarify for those that truly don't. A few inches from being born? Well yes, but surviving? Surviving that is the key. And then after surviving, who would take care of these children?
I also heard that Saruman's character will not have the resolution from the book. As a matter of fact, I heard there wasn't going to be any resolution whatsoever to his character. This means that the movie will lack an ending.
I'm very frustrated.

Hey, Bas.
Date: 2004-01-06 03:09 pm (UTC)I wish I had something to help ease your frustration... I'm actually somewhat glad that that picture won, because it means (to me) that we (the more "common" people) aren't completely losing ourselves into what disasters are currently taking place in the media, but instead finding joy in the simpler, cuter things... But that's just me. *shrug*
