I love the crispness of the air. I loved going back to school with new challenges and old faces. I loved new paper and sharpened pencils. I loved new teachers and not having a past. I loved starting over. I loved the leaves falling. I love driving with the windows down listening to punk rock and just feeling young and alive. I love how the air was just cool enough in gym that it stung just a little, but after some movement I'd warm up.

I love fall!

Ronald Austin Muenzer

Former Oak Ridge police officer

Ronald Austin Muenzer, 63, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, died after a long illness on Sept. 25, 2005, at his home on Everest Circle.
Ron was a beloved person in Oak Ridge, growing up on Tabor Road with his sister Ellie, brother Bill, and parents Walter and Dorothy. Ron was active in his community and a devout Christian. He was a sweet and loving child and grew into a towering and powerful man full of courage and bravery.

After graduating from Oak Ridge High School, he joined the U.S. Navy for four years serving as a sonar operator in the Submarine corps in the Cold War. After discharge he worked in St. Louis for several years and then returned to Oak Ridge to finish college at the University of Tennessee. He graduated with honors and became a police officer in Oak Ridge and met and married Verda Tackett.

As an officer, Ron was compassionate and empathic with victims of crime, and also, he felt for the citizens in impossible situations where crime many times begins. So he returned to school and graduated from seminary, again with honors.

He was able to work for some time as a preacher, but crippling back pain and arthritis developed and worsened, preventing him from being as involved in life as much as he wanted. Still, he preached occasionally at local churches and drove a bus for school children, who loved him dearly.

Verda, his wife of 34 years, was the love of his life and they were devoted to each other. Verda worked hard to help support the family, stood by Ron and his disability through thick and thin, and is equally courageous in the story of their life together.

He was a devoted father to Ron and Melissa and a loving grandfather to his grandson, Hunter.

His wife Verda Muenzer, his son Ron Muenzer, daughter Melissa Wright, grandson Hunter, his brother Bill Muenzer of Knoxville, and his sister Ellie Tucker of Chapel Hill, N.C., survive him.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

Online messages to the family may be left at www.martinoakridgefuneralhome.com.

His family loved him here on earth and prays for his peace and comfort in his life everlasting.

Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

OR man dies of gunshot wound

Oak Ridge police were called to an Everest Circle home Sunday, where a man died from a gunshot wound.

Police Capt. Alan Massengill said Ronald Austin Muenzer, 63, 119 Everest Circle, was found dead about 8 a.m. in his bedroom. His wife heard a noise and went to the bedroom, he said.

Muenzer died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Massengill said.

He had been ill for some time, Massengill said. He said officers found a handgun at the scene.

As for what I remember of Mr. Muenzer...
- I remember that he was my second grade bus driver. I had just moved from Port Saint Lucie, Florida to Oak Ridge.
- I remember trick or treating at his house when I was nine.
- I remember our back and forth banter. I was a nerd. He was the nice bus driver who know about proper grammar, but who would also discipline the bus if needed.
- I remember a lot of bus rides home with Mr. Muenzer driving. In junior high school, he was my afternoon bus driver. I was his third to last stop.
- I remember my best friend dating Billy Miller. Billy's family lived in two houses and he also rode our bus!
- I remember listening to my taped episodes of X-Files.

Everybody was dancing in the moonlight!

Well, my mood WAS cheerful until the last part. :-p That is a sad, sad thing.

I love fall too.
Will you be going back to school after you get married? I never liked the feeling of NEWNESS when it came to school. I probably still don't, but I'm not sure since I'm such a drop out.
