Senator Alexander,
On June 16th, you may or may not be aware that Michael Moore published an article on his website (here is the article: http://www.michaelmoore.com/mustread/index.php
?pageNumber=3) My question is certainly inspired by this article. Regardless of how Mr. Moore interpretted the event, I was curious why this bill was opposed. I would imagine because it should just be ethical NOT to lynch people or maybe because the bill included something extra that was just plain rediculous. However, I believe we should all be held accountable for our actions so I pose the question to you. Why was this bill opposed by
yourself and several of your peers?
Thank you for your time,
Janina Robbins
So I sent that, but I cannot figure out which bill this was that he voted against. It's a bill to make lynching a federal offense so that the feds could get involved. Upon further research, I've discovered it is Senate resolution 442. S.RES.442
Title: A resolution apologizing to the victims of lynching and their descendants for the Senate's failure to enact anti-lynching legislation.
Sponsor: Sen Landrieu, Mary L. [LA] (introduced 9/29/2004) Cosponsors (1)
Latest Major Action: 9/29/2004 Referred to Senate committee. Status: Referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

So the resolution passed the Senate. What does the bill do? It officially apologizes to the familes of lynching victims and it is a vow to remember how devastating lynching can be. Does it make it a federal offense? Nope. Does it change the past? Nope. Why this is a bill, I'm actually quite uncertain. I guess a bill will make it more official or more sincerely apologetic for what happened.
Lynching is bad, mmmkay?
