Yo, yo! The roof is on fire!
Tuesday, August 3rd, 2004 11:33 pmSo I went to see The Village today with my two friends, Cyle and Garrett. I hadn't realized how long it had been since Cyle and Garrett had caught up. I'm in touch with Garrett all the time because he's my best friend's husband so I get updates from her. He and Cyle are best friends, but Cyle works 3rd shift and Garrett works 80 a week.
As for the Village, I found myself laughing at the end. I feel I might have ruined it for some people, but dammit it was too funny! The ending was too funny that is. As a word of caution, this is coming from the girl who thought Skinner was hilarious because Ted Raimi portrayed a nice guy serial killer who skinned people and walked around in their skins. Sorry if I ruin the movie for anyone, but like you were going to see a movie starring Ricki Lake, Ted Raimi, and Traci Lords.
I just loved that M decided to be "J" in this movie. That was funny for me.
Spoilers containing a post I made on another board about this movie.
I love that the security guard's whole life is all mixed up now. What is his job really? Can he keep this a secret? Does he go into the woods after the girl? I love it! His life is ruined. For a little while anyway.
Noah dying just made me laugh. I was hoping it was her daddy. But I was glad William Hurt survived and Adrian Brody/Noah bit the big one. Now they don't have to worry about coming up with some sort of punishment for Noah's action. Nope, Those Whom We Do Not Speak sure took care of that. If you murder and get the bad color on you, you get your neck broke! Booyah!
What do the women do when they go through their monthly cycle? That's got to be a scary time for them. I guess you'd just stay in a constantly pregnant state until menopause.
I was expecting medicine to be in someone's black box.
What the hell was up with the spooky tree shots when Noah, dressed as the creature, was running at Ivy? I decided to scream "Ahhh! The trees" for effect. Hopefully someone was scared. Not as though it could be heard over the soundtrack. I suddenly started thinking of Evil Dead and the evil, raping tree. Of course, it could just be that the trees = unknown = fear? I don't know. I didn't think about it that much.
I can see why people could be disappointed by the movie. Had they never seen an M Night movie, they would have been tricked into this movie.
So great! If Lucius survives, what now? He was determined to leave. They had to step up their scare tactics. And now he'll know that there are kind people outside of the woods and that his blind wife made it out. And that's if she keeps the secret of the elders. Which she may do since she's convinced there may be creatures out there. Of course, these must be pretty wussy creatures if a blind girl can beat them.
Who was skinning the animals? The elders were sure surprised by some of the events. Noah showed us that he had a knife and wasn't afraid to use it. But certainly the elders were behind some of it.
Out of context that shed scene cracks me up. First of all, I think of Fierce Creatures when Kevin Kline's Vince McCain impersonates his dad, Rod, and says "When you're naughty, you go to the shed." But secondly, how fucked up and twisted is Edward Walker? "Do you know where we are?" "The unused shed" Great job, girl! Now try very hard not to scream as I open the door of the unused shed. Try very hard not to scream, Ivy, as I bring you into this shed and tell you to reach out for this hideous thing I know is in the dark in here. Oh, you're really close. Getting warmer. Getting warmer. Only 3 more steps! Great job, Mr. US History Professor!
I couldn't help, but think of Harry Potter references. I'm Lucius. Lucius Malfoy. Those Whom We Do Not Speak? Oh yeah. That's Lord Voldemort...I mean He Who Must Not Be Named. Hmmmm, it's like a universal theme that the unknown = fear! I think I get it! /sarcasm
Messages that I took from this movie. I told these messages to my mom and she doesn't sound that excited about the movie. So as a disclaimer, these are the cut and dry messages. M Night presents them beautifully and not nearly as cut and dry as I present them now.
The messages: Ignorance/Unknown = Fear. Society is the root of all evil, but can be a life saver.
I really felt that the time in between actions where he lets the anxiety build gave me time to analyze my own fears and preconceptions of the movie which lead to immediate analysis of this movie. I really enjoyed it. It gave me time to think about some very interesting questions.
Alright, that's all I got for right now. Thoughts?
I did enjoy this movie. I enjoyed the messages M. Night was giving.
After the movie, we went to lunch and started talking about movies. Cyle and I loved Anchorman and Garrett hadn't seen it yet. So off we went to see when that was showing. And turns out it was showing in about 15 minutes so we watched that. I hurt from laughing after the movie. And this is the third time I've seen it. I think I have convinced my mother to see Fahrenheit 9-11 which will make the 3rd time I see that movie.
Sidenote: My mom is playing with marbles in the living room.
I drove Garrett home (his wife wanted to borrow his car for the day since he was off and their van has a horrible transmission) and we wound up talking about politics and philosophy in the car for an hour! I'm pretty certain I've convinced him to see Fahrenheit 9-11. I think he'll enjoy seeing someone else share his opinions. He and his wife have put off seeing it since they have a new baby.
I've joined an alumni board for my high school. They have a topic opened about Fahrenheit 9-11. I have, of course, posted on it to stir up shit. I'll copy part of that post here and throw the questions out to you.
What do I think of Michael Moore? He's not a saint. He's human. He's a filmmaker even. But he asks questions. There should be more question asking. Then we wouldn't have to worry about how stupid and uninformed the public is. Or that some people can watch a movie and come out of it completely convinced of its absolute truth.
Sometimes I want to ask... What happened to the American rebel spirit? Did it die when those Two Towers came down? Did we sign it over with the Patriot Act? Are we now Sheeple? Will they call this time the 'Dim Ages' in future history classes? Why do the people who protested the Vietnam War now say we shouldn't change presidents in the middle of a war? How will changing presidents tarnish the memory of those friends who were lost? As Chris Rock joked, how is marriage sacred when we have television shows that allow the viewers to pick the bride or groom? Why will gay marriage put some horrible mark on that oh so sacred of vows? Why are those vows so sacred?
I'll stop there. Thoughts?
On the job front, I will hopefully have one interview next week. I feel that job is locked in for me. I got my paycheck for last week was which very, very meager. I received a call today at 4:35 pm while I was out from a place I applied at early last month. I will return the call tomorrow. I'm still interested in working two jobs for a while. The job that is locked will be a 3rd shift job so I will be gone from 9 pm - 6 am, but as I have been saying "I am in no position to be picky right now." So we'll see what pans out. The sad thing is that I have several job leads right now and I'm stuck in a holding pattern for the interview for the job that pays the most.
And on a summary note, I have been playing DDR again.
Though I've tried I've fallen/I have sunk so low/I messed up/Better I should know/So don't come round here and/Tell me I told you so

ETA: I should have mentioned this a while back, but June can be a tough month for me. Mattie Stepanek, who wrote beautiful poetry to express himself, died June 22nd. He was 13. I urge you to get inspired! Check out his poetry if you need some help.
