Spidey, Spidey!
Sunday, July 11th, 2004 04:27 amSpiderman. I've read one good discussion on this. I really need more people to see this movie because I have this need to discuss.
First of all, I loved this movie much more than the first movie. The first movie was great. It had cameos and all, but it just lacked something. I will have to rewatch it so I can put my finger on it.
1. The hero factor. It's about damn time we have a hero movie! If you're going to do a hero movie, make him a hero already! That was my biggest complaint about Around the World in 80 Days. Philleaus Fogg was such a poser wannabe. He was supposed to be an upstanding individual who believed without a doubt of his convictions. Not this wimpster of a guy who had to be convinced and egged on and then BRIBED to go around the world.
Peter Parker is one of those heros that gives everything for what he believes. And he fights with this. He doesn't want to do it. But it is the right thing to do. He's willing to suffer for his beliefs. He sacrifices himself to save other people. This is the kind of hero that I fell in love with as a child. This is the kind of hero that I would willing be for a worthy cause. And this is the kind of hero that I have missed seeing. Everyone is so mediocre anymore. It's so easy to put on those blinders and just be mediocre too.
Go Spiderman! I approve of my godson idolizing you now.
2. Sam Raimi!!
The Ode to Evil Dead! The hospital scene was so awesome. No one can laugh about chopping off a hand unless that person is Ash (Bruce Campbell) thank you very much. I always feel the need at the end of that scene to shout in a crazy voice: Who's laughing now?!
The POV shoots! Thank you, Sam, for those. They really gave the movie something special. Seeing through the eyes of the twisted characters. Sweet!
Amazing reflection shots. In the cafe when MJ is waiting for Peter, I notice that we're looking out at a store whose banner is... backwards? No. It's the reflection on the cafe window and when the camera pulls back and goes out of focus, we see MJ sitting there. That was the coolest shot. I really enjoyed Spiderman swinging through the city as a reflection on Doc Oc's sunglasses too. So complex!
3. Complex characters of Doc Oc, Harry, MJ, and Peter. Everyone hates MJ. I hate that she goes by MJ. What a stupid nickname. But I like her. She does have a thing for Pete (another stupid nickname). And if he likes her, I can't deny the guy. She didn't annoy me like she did in the last movie. I don't know what happened. Maybe I just like Kirsten now. Maybe something else, but it's something I can't put my finger on. Doc Oc. Poor guy! He doesn't want to be evil. He's got that internal conflict going on. Love those tragic characters. Angst for me, baby. Harry. Do I really need to say what's going on with Harry? Come on. Great stuff. More Angst! Peter too. I mean who doesn't angst? Life sucks, babies. But dammit rise above it. Listen to the good advice passed on to you.
4. Danny Elfman! Thank you, Danny. I love the feel that Danny's music brings to a movie. Some people are tired of Danny and Sam together, but I'm not. It really added to the comic book feel. For me anyway.
5. Cameos. Muchos Gracias for the cameos! Bruce--are you getting old? Tell that Sam that if you want your hair colored, he damn well better let you. It makes me sad because all Sam ever wanted to do was make a huge movie with you as the stare. What happened to y'all's youth? Do I really need to mention Ted? JK Simmons. I love you! That was an amazing Jameson you did. Thank you, thank you. Hal and the basset hound. Cute. We needed humor in between the ass kickings. Scott Speigel. All you wanted was a piece of pizza, but that mean old Spiderman won't let you have a piece, huh? Tough luck. John Landis, they do love you as a doctor, huh? Loved your shirt, buddy. How's that other MJ you know? Michael Jackson. You still keep in touch? Thriller, baby.
6. The Soundtrack. I really want to buy this. One day I'll have a job.
Anita complained about the happy ending. I laugh. Can Peter Parker ever really have happiness? I'll give him the happy ending just so I can walk out of the theatre not feeling totally awful with foreshadowing of doom. *cue dramatic music* And Niki said she wouldn't pay to see it again. I would. Love that movie.
I won't argue with people who have logic though. Just poke fun! And I'm not writing about my day. This is just for Spidey.

Date: 2004-07-11 08:47 am (UTC)I actually liked MJ too. But for different reasons. I was laughing at what a bitch she was. And then I was laughing at how clueless Peter is. They just like to fuck eachother over constantly and it brings me joy.
That one night, it was like, "Goddamn. It really sucks to be Peter Parker." He let Harry slap him like a bitch in front of all those upperclass morons. Haha.
Dr. Oc is totally my fav in the whole movie. That man that plays him has such expressive eyes. And a cool pointy nose.
So wait... Peter loses his powers everytime he gets dumped on his ass from Mary Jane? So he has no CHOICE but to stay with her, right?
Can't wait for Hobgoblin. The raving lunatic.

Date: 2004-07-11 05:22 pm (UTC)An ED fan! ROCK ON! BB just keeps going up in my book.
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head You loved his walk in that part didn't you? Just admit it! It was the best walk ever! haha I was all "It's TED!!!"
Sam: Yeah, guy. Yeah. Just walk like this doofus.
Ted:
:(I'm glad you liked Doc Oc too. I did, but all I've heard are critical things about him.
Mary Jane has that kind of power of you. So I've heard.
Raving lunatics are cool!

Date: 2004-07-12 02:05 pm (UTC)I still hate MJ, but yeah, she's a total self-serving cow. Poor Peter, he's a giant dumbass. Where's his Gwen Stacey, damn it??
Doc Ock was Alfred Molina, and yes, he is brilliant. I love him. Rent Frida sometime.
Dude, Bas, you totally forgot to list Stan Lee's cameo, you hoser! It's, like, the most important one!
And yeah, bring on Hobgoblin. I am psyched for that.
