My fan fic lecture/rant

basildestinyI'm having some troubles writing my fan fiction. I feel that if I write this out, it might help. I try not be a canon snob. I don't want to discourage people from writing. Sometimes reading something is better than nothing at all. I find that I usually don't like fans. These are the true fanatics who have every little detail memorized and are quick to inform of your error--not for your benefit, but so they can gloat at their amazing memorization skills. And lack of having a life as well. Just a note for these fanatics: no ones likes you. Your friends like to use you as a weapon so that you can remain an elite little clique. A hint? Learn some humility! Or else you are doomed to be a drama queen for the rest of your life. This means immature!
All you slash writers out there: If you're writing as a challenge to keep it as close to canon as possible, I can understand and respect your need for a challenge. Please stop writing about sex only. Unless your slash is about JC or some other nymphomaniac, sex is not the only thing people think about.
I never wanted to write an English lesson. As open-minded as I may be or attempt to be, it turns out that I am a big snob of writing. I can never finish my writings. I am that initimidated by the true writers out there. Recently I am finding fewer and fewer fan fiction authors/works that aren't slash. Now I can understand why the gay community would be writing these, but most slash writers aren't gay. I have no problems with gay relationships. I do have a problem with character rape and poorly written fiction. First of all, young writers: please study grammar, use spell check. Secondly, give the characters other motivations than the plotline of the latest porno, soap opera, or romance novel. People think about sex, but for healthy people, it is not their only thought. Lastly, these are your characters. True, you are borrowing them for a while to tell your own story, but you must love them as your own. Only then can you give them life.
Don't write fics with lyrics in them. While I'm glad to know that you were inspired by a song to write this fiction, don't insert the lyrics and then the characters' thoughts and reactions to the lyrics. If you must have lyrics, then make them original. Your own song. If you want to give a nod to your inspiration, you can do it without putting all of the lyrics in there. Otherwise, don't call it a fic. It's a song analyzation, line by line.

Date: 2004-03-10 03:09 pm (UTC)I suck at writing so I've never published my stories anywhere. Well, except on Elly's boards. I'm not big on writing. I do it at night when I have nothing else to do but I don't feel like publishing the fics anywhere. It feels nicer to just write for myself. When I don't publish them anywhere I don't need to think if I can put this and that there because other people might think it's weird/stupid/lame. :D Besides, all of my fics have Kasumi in them so I doubt no one would want to read those anyway. I've heard that self insert fics are one of the most annoying ones. But *I* do enjoy them and that's all that matters. XD
