Worse Vacation Ever so far
Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006 12:51 pmThis vacation has totally sucked!
We got up yesterday, loaded the car up, loaded both the dogs up and drove over to that inlaws where we left the big dog. It was already a much later than we wanted start, but we hit the road. Around 6, we get a phone call from my father-in-law. Our German Shepherd Dog, Riker, has died. He came home and the dog was just lying there. Unusual for him since he's usually howling and barking and whining. So he went out to check on him and he was dead.
This is devasting. I loved that dog. He was my husband's baby. He was spoiled rotten, but so affectionate.
I had just taught him the command hug. And he was really good at it. He'd jump up on the bed in the mornings and give me a hug. And a kiss. And when we were playing WoW, he'd come over to see what I was doing at my computer and he'd give me a hug. I'd even gotten him to give me a hug when day when I was standing up to see if would do it. He also was my video game buddy. He'd sit on the couch and keep me company. He was my sweet big dog who let me put ribbons and bells on him. He liked it when I called him a pretty. He loved being brushed.
He was pretty black and silver German Shepherd. I'd never seen that coloring before. It was very beautiful. It made him the best looking dog.
I'm glad that I got my hug and kiss from him before we left him. And that he and Kira were playing the previous night and having a great time with each other. I'm glad the last time we went Kira was being affectionate and staying over with him even though he was tied up and there were 3 other dogs she could have played with.
He loved baby toys because he was a big baby. The mini hedgehog that I bought for Kira. The mini tennis balls. The baby sized kong. And he loved stuffed animals. While Kira would rip them apart and pull the stuffing out, he just loved to carry them around and lick them. Sure it was gross when he'd put a sopping wet stuffed critter on you, but at the same time, it was adorable.
He was born on Matt's mom's birthday and died on my mom's birthday. We're going to miss him. I'm sure there will be more posts about him, but I needed to post in LJ firstly because you're my friends and I needed some kind words and because I wanted to write down these things I was thinking about him before things got too blurred.
What a miserable vacation this is turning out to be.

"animals don’t have souls. But the Bible does talk about the lion and lamb lying peacefully together in heaven. ... it’s my opinion that our pets will be in heaven. Why? Simply because God loves to see His children happy. And though we’d be plenty happy in heaven without pets, how hard would it be for God to allow our pets to be with us? Not hard at all! He can do anything. So I like to think that He’ll have our pets there, just because He loves to see us smile." -Susie Shellenberger
