Sunday, July 24th, 2005 08:48 amSo I finally saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I know that some people loved this version of the movie. It may have been that I saw Willy Wonka so many times that it has forever tainted my view of the movie. But I felt that the original movie should have been called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the new one should have been called Willy Wonka. Charlie was much better developped in the first movie than the second. I was also incredibly partial to Gene Wilder's Willy. He was mean and sarcastic to the naughty little children. Tim Burton's deals much more with Willy's past. Something that I quite frankly had never been interested in. Willy Wonka was just plain magic. It didn't matter from whence he came. I liked Gene Wilder's Wonka who had control of his senses and even had a spy! I've read the book, but I've honestly forgotten the canon. Still the new one has it's high points. I really did enjoy this new Charlie. He was much more innocent overall it seemed than the original. Maybe? The movie didn't flow as weirdly as the original with all of the cuts to different scenes, but I liked those all the same. This one was quite funny and I would have been sad to miss the amazing Oompa Loompa songs. Still, it just didn't seem to have the solid characters, hardly any development. What did Charlie's mom do? She seemed to have a full time job of cooking cabbage stew. I thought Grandpa George was better developped than Charlie's dad at times. And why did it turn all Tiny Tim's Christmas dinner at the end. It was definitely a Tim Burton flick. I knew that and then forgot it and then remembered it again. I was watching the credits and thought "Gee, these look a lot like the credits to The Corpse Bride. It's all the same people." Then it hit me Duh! Tim Burton. He even got Danny Elfman. So to hit my favorite points from this one: Oompa Loompa songs! I didn't think there was enough Wonka candy magic in this movie. I wanted more of the candy magic. I missed him adding shoes to a concoction to give it more kick.
Matthew wants to see Wicked! YAY! Wicked! I thought of a certain person from California when that came on. Now I'm wanting to read the book and listen to the soundtrack even more! I think one day, he and I will even travel to En Why See for a viewing of Avenue Q! Hopefully it will still be showing then.
Well I've daudled here long enough. Time to get the day moving. I've got early church today and then it's off for some wedding shopping!
I'm hoping to get some heart shaped rice which is safe for the birdies!
