I read a review a couple of week's ago that said that Sarah McLachlin was so popular because of her emotions in her songs and music. When did this become the exception rather than the rule for music?

I'm not sure. I remember one of my non theatre friends once said that One Song Glory (from Rent) would be a hit, if he didn't sing with so much emotion. That never made sense to me.

That's rediculous. Those are the best songs.

I completely agree. In fact, I tend to bore of a song if their isn't emotion behind it.
