An economic thought

Today I was thinking about something that [livejournal.com profile] spaghetti_os wrote in her DJ the other day.

Investing is smart, but the poor and middle class have zero idea how to do that. Or even how to save, which is why they take taxes weekly from our paycheck. They need to teach that in school. You don't have to make a lot to earn a lot.

And I realized that my response to her didn't address this topic. So I'm going to go back and talk about it for a little bit while I take a break from cleaning for my back. (UGH, my back!)

I just want to say that I completely agree with you, Ro. Could we take my neighbors as an example of how poor and middle class people don't know how to spend their money? I'm not the any good at investment, but then again I'm more of a communist than a capitalist. Equality for all, baby. If only! But on the other hand, we still don't have healthcare for everyone. We do have two Americas as far as healthcare goes. Now by no means do I think that people who have earned money owe the rest of the world their money, I just don't think it's fair for the lower two tax brackets to be carrying all of the burden. You can only tax us so much before we're making no money at all. And that's where I have the problem. I've said it before and I've said it again that I would support paying MORE taxes. But that would have to be under the condition that we get better programs from it. You can't take our money and then not let us benefit from it. Education or healthcare or something in return. As it stands right now, I need as much money as I can just to pay my bills. Let's not even talk about investing. I have bills to pay. One million more people in the poverty level this year and those people are without healthcare too. I'd love to be taught how to invest, but you can't take the food out of my mouth to do it.

I'll say it again. Who do I think would know how to spend my money better: my neighbors (who are on welfare) or economists who went to school and got a degree in that? Obviously the guy with degree is going to be much more reliable than my neighbor. The problem is that the Republican party does not support my views on this issue (or on any issue that I can think of at the moment). They're all for more tax cuts and deficit spending. And the bigger tax cuts are goiing to the higher incomes. This is a GREAT plan to encourage the economy, but again I say that you can't starve the lower classes to encourage the economy. You may have to cut back a little bit and make it more even. And that may be what Bush is doing, but I disagree. It could just be that I'm biased, but ... that's for you to decide on November 2nd.

And now for something completely different.
